FAI Passes Resolution Calling for European Football Ban on Israel
The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to present a official proposal to European football's governing body, demanding the banning of Israel from continental club and international competitions.
Basis of the Recommended Suspension
This motion, which was proposed by Irish side Bohemians, cited alleged breaches by the Israel Football Association of two key Uefa statutes.
- Inability to apply and uphold an proper anti-racism policy.
- Organisation of football teams in disputed territories lacking the approval of the Palestrian FA.
Ballot Results and Next Steps
According to an announcement from the Irish FA, the resolution was supported by 74 votes, with 7 opposed and 2 not voting.
They intends to formally submit this request to the UEFA's decision-making body, asking for the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the Football Association of Ireland, an ordinary resolution was posed to delegates. It passed by a majority.
Previous Uefa Considerations
Uefa had earlier paused intentions to exclude Israeli football at the end of September, following the revealing of a US peace proposal for the area.
While they never officially confirmed considering an special session on the issue, preparations were believed to be well developed.
Global Backdrop
The FAI resolution follows similar calls in September from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for banning Israel from global football.
Those requests were made after United Nations experts asked Fifa and Uefa to ban Israel, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.
Israel has rejected these claims and described the findings as scandalous.
Potential Consequences
If European football's authority decide to ban the IFA, it would likely create tension with the US administration – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.
Although Uefa has the authority to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under world football's governing body.
