Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
