The US government stated it would supply limited relief to millions of food stamp beneficiaries as the protracted federal closure neared a unprecedented period.
Benefit Cut Details
Amid increasing anxiety for the nearly 42 million individuals participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the agriculture department indicated it would employ reserve funds to sustain benefits, albeit at only 50% of the regular amount recipients normally receive.
Money for the program legally ran out on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th consecutive day with no clear signal of resolution.
Legal Actions
The announcement came in a judicial submission after previous rejections to provide emergency funding on claimed legal grounds. A federal judge had ruled the administration could not withhold program funds due to the shutdown.
Following the judicial ruling, the administration stated it would be "privileged" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Implementation Hurdles
Officials suggested that money could start flowing by midweek, but highlighted the need for more guidance from the legal system on how to legally reallocate funds for SNAP benefits.
- Several local governments have stated it will take days or even extended time to issue benefits to vulnerable families.
- Extended lines have been observed at pantries throughout the United States.
- In several regions, stadium car parks were converted into help locations.
