Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
